FIBER ART: OUT OF THE ORDINARY FABRICS
28/01/2015
Fiber Art also called Art Fabric, Texil Art or Arte Tessile is a trend belonging to Contemporary Art.
The climax of its development can be circumscribed between the 60s and 70s when textile artistic flair goes through an expressive and thrilling phase thus giving way to an extreme freedom for experimentation with extremely varied materials and shapes.
Speaking about Fiber Art we mean:
- the art that uses and handles all kind of fibres through traditional or personal techniques.
- starting from the basics of weaving reaches contemporary forms and adaptations of weaving with current materials and shapes.
Everything’s flexible becomes textile: yarns, ropes, paper, fabrics, fibers, rough fibers, felt, haywires, plastic, plastic nets, plastic sticks weavings, grass and twigs weavings…everything goes in FIBER ART!
Among the techniques we can surely quote some fabric paintings or printings made with molds made with different materials: toothpicks, rubber bands, laces as molds, leaves and hand-knitted or machine-sewn.
The main concerns Fiber Art had to face with were its own positioning among the arts: we wonder where does handicraft end and art begin as the products are true works of art, such canvas meticulously designed by non-conventional masters.
International specialized annual expositions/shows’ subject (Losanna, Kyoto, Graz), Fiber Art is present in Italy, too. Some time ago the Chieri (TO) event ended while in the future the MINIARTEXTIL event is scheduled in Como.
